Art

In this class, you will explore your creative side by embarking on a journey immersed in various artistic mediums. We will dive into the 7 elements of art: line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color! You will begin to fine-tune your technical skills, appreciation, and understanding of art. The overall goal of this class is to be a building block for the Rio Rico High School’s Fine Arts Program.

Band

Band is designed to expose students to the world of instrumental music via the band repertoire. Every student who is taking band will need to obtain a band instrument. Some skills and areas of knowledge that will be learned are: reading music (note names, counting, etc.) techniques of playing the instrument, performance etiquette, listening and group performance skills. Although there will be occasional written classwork, most of the work for this class is made up of class rehearsals, practicing at home and performances. For this reason the process skills during rehearsals and the performances will comprise a large part of the grade.

Band (Jazz)

Jazz band is designed to teach students the fundamentals of playing in a jazz band. Jazz band is open to 7th & 8th graders who have at least one year of experience playing an instrument.

Computer Applications

Computer Applications will combine real life computer skills of today, alongside planning for life after middle school. Students will learn typing skills and will be introduced to Google Suite products. Students will also be using Defined Careers. This on-line platform designed to introduce students to a variety of career options. Students take an aptitude test to determine the different pathways best suited for them based on their interests and skills. Through real-world scenarios, video, and independent projects, students are free to explore different companies, industries, and careers. Students will learn about programs that are interesting to them, while learning how to problem-solve and build critical thinking skills vital to their future.

Dance

This course introduces basic modern dance technique and movement. The primary objectives of this course are to build competence in basic technique and terminology, to develop an appreciation of the role of modern dance in America, and to learn about the different elements of dance.

Note: This course involves significant physical movement and requires on-stage performances during the semester.

Health

Health Education is an essential part of core instruction because it involves the development of the whole student. Along with health related topics based on the State Health Standards, 6 Pillars of Character are covered and implemented in a variety of ways in the curriculum. The mission of health Education is to educate as well as empower all students as independent learners to sustain a healthy lifestyle as one of the cornerstones of a productive and fulfilling life. Based on the information given in health students will have the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions. Health Education is a lifelong process, which is the primary responsibility of the student, with strong support coming from home, school, and the community.

Robotify

Robotify is designed to support students in learning, developing and applying the skills and practices essential to engaging with computer Science. The content is centered on coding skills learning and development with in-browser programming of 3D simulated robots. Students will progress at their own pace, while also enjoying a game like learning experience. Students can engage with programming in both Blockly and Python coding languages.

Physical Education

8TH only

Spanish HS Credit

This course will be an introduction to the four language skills of the language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Content will include: basic grammatical structures of Spanish, basic vocabulary, simple sentences and verbal tenses, simple conversational scenarios, introductory readings and introductory cultural and historical information Spain and hispanic America.

This class is for a full year ( 2 semesters) to obtain the High School Credit for Foreign Language at Rio Rico High School, with a minimum grade of 85 in each semester.

Sports Performance

The Sports Performance/Athletic Conditioning course provides students a “positive association with exercise, a desire to be fit, and a goal to live a long healthy lifestyle” (Crossfit, 2020). More specifically, throughout the course students will learn; fundamental exercises to improve sports-performance, receive a personalized or prescribed amount of exercise, improve their fitness, explore opportunities for success or improvement, and discuss the role of diet or food. Additionally, the course integrates fun, competitive, and collaborative activities that help students gain interpersonal and intrapersonal skills such as adaptive communication, teamwork, empathy, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-management.
